Emirati engineer Marwan Al Haj started his career at the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). However, life's circumstances transformed him into a person of determination, sparking concerns about job security. "I feared losing my position," he confided to Khaleej Times. "Yet, DEWA went above and beyond to ensure my comfort and efficiency in my role."
Similar to governmental bodies, numerous private enterprises are now hiring people of determination (POD) for their distinctive viewpoints and problem-solving abilities. Aster DM Healthcare employs over 36 such individuals, who significantly contribute to the company. "People of determination often face and conquer daily challenges, developing exceptional problem-solving skills and innovative thinking," stated a human resource representative from Aster DM Healthcare. "These traits are invaluable in the healthcare sector's dynamic and intricate environment."
Innovations Group, a recruitment firm, recently facilitated the hiring of PODs for an IT client, garnering a substantial response. "We received 26 applications and hired 18 candidates," disclosed Nikhil Nanda, the group's director. "Conducting interviews posed unique challenges due to varying disabilities, but each candidate demonstrated a fervent desire to succeed."
Rana Fanek, a Senior Associate at Aster Pharmacy, who is an amputee, initially struggled to secure employment in the UAE. "Finding a job was tough until Aster offered me this chance," she recounted. "My first interview was very welcoming and optimistic, with Aster fully confident in my capabilities. I'm grateful to be approaching seven years with Aster."
Starting in a customer service role at the contact center, Rana advanced to her current position, managing corporate clients' pharmaceutical needs and fostering long-term relationships. "Additionally, I support our retail branches in cultivating similar customer relationships and achieving their professional objectives," she explained.
For Marwan, workplace support has been crucial throughout his 17-year career. "Besides a reserved parking spot near the entrance, there are two individuals, Saeed and Mansoor, dedicated to assisting me," he noted. "This assistance includes help with physical tasks and managing HR needs, facilitated through the Sadeqi program."
Due to a hand tremor, writing has become challenging for Marwan. "Last month, I sought a speech-to-text microphone, and my company insisted on purchasing it to ensure I had all necessary tools for my job," he shared. The company also operates the Absher program, which provides personalized support plans for each POD employee and addresses any additional needs.
Executive admin Umm Saad collaborates with Marwan and other PODs to ensure workplace navigation support. "My role includes ensuring full accessibility and individualized support for three PODs among the 66 in the organization, maintaining open feedback channels," she detailed. "Working with POD colleagues enhances all employees' adaptability, communication, and problem-solving skills, raising awareness and fostering an inclusive mindset," she added.
