Apple received a directive from the EU on Tuesday to cease geo-blocking, a practice that restricts content based on a user's geographical location, across services like its App Store, Apple Arcade, Music, iTunes Store, Books, and Podcasts. The European Commission disclosed that it had detected several geo-blocking practices on certain Apple Media Services that may be in violation of regulations, and warned of potential enforcement actions by national regulators if Apple did not rectify the situation.

"We are intensifying our efforts against geo-blocking. No company, regardless of size, should unfairly discriminate against customers based on their nationality, residence, or place of business," stated European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager. The EU informed Apple that it has one month to present commitments detailing how it plans to address the identified geo-blocking issues.
