The precise number of PlayStation 3 consoles ever produced has been disclosed by a current Sony employee. The revelation came during a Twitter discussion about the PS3's notorious boomerang controller. A Sony programmer chimed in, mentioning they had recently seen the controller at Sony's Japan headquarters on the 16th floor near a coffee machine. The employee snapped a photo of the boomerang controller in its display case, revealing a PS3 console beneath it labeled, "In memory of PS3 last production. Manufactured 88,159,116 pcs. Period: Oct 2006 - June 2016." This confirms that just over 88 million PS3 consoles were manufactured over nearly a decade. The last official sales figure for the PS3 was approximately 87.4 million units sold as of March 2017.
Last year, former Sony president Shawn Layden also confirmed the exact number of PSP units manufactured, using a similar phrasing as seen on the PS3 console in the employee's photo. While PS3 games can still be played today through PlayStation Plus via streaming, users have long hoped for native backwards compatibility. Rumors have circulated about PS3 emulation on the PS5, but its unique architecture makes its implementation uncertain.
