Over 10,000 members of the Filipino community in the UAE assembled at the Dubai World Trade Centre on June 9 to mark the 126th anniversary of their nation's independence. This festive event, brimming with colorful cultural displays, spirited music, and a strong sense of togetherness, served as a prelude to the official Philippine Independence Day on June 12, which commemorates the end of 333 years of Spanish rule in 1898. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE's Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, praised the Filipino community's significant contributions to the UAE's growth and development, stating, 'Your knowledge, talent, and energy have contributed to our development and progress. We in the UAE cherish our friendship with the Filipino people.' He also highlighted the enriching interactions with the Filipino community and their contributions across various sectors, reinforcing the strong bilateral ties.
The event featured captivating cultural performances that highlighted Philippine heritage, including the intricate Tinikling dance, which mesmerized the audience with its rhythmic bamboo clapping. Classic Filipino songs filled the air, stirring feelings of national pride and unity. The celebration, organized by the Philippines Business Council in the UAE and Emirates Loves Philippines, was enhanced by lively Filipino food stalls offering a variety of beloved dishes. Art, photography, and souvenir stalls added to the immersive experience, reminiscent of the Philippines. The atmosphere was filled with animated conversations, laughter, and a sense of solidarity.
Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, Alfonso Ferdinand Ver, emphasized the robust growth and presence of the Filipino community in the UAE, noting their historical contribution since before 1971 and the ongoing strength of diplomatic relations. He described the bond between the Filipino community and the UAE as deeply spiritual, allowing Filipinos to work, invest, and celebrate their national day in harmony. Ambassador Ver underscored the supportive environment in the UAE that enables the Filipino community to thrive and succeed.
