Former England cricketer and coach Graham Thorpe has passed away at the age of 55, according to a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday.
Thorpe, who played 100 test matches and 82 one-day internationals from 1993 to 2005, scored 16 test centuries. He held positions as England's batting coach and assistant coach before resigning in February 2022 following a 4-0 defeat in the Ashes. He was subsequently appointed as Afghanistan's head coach in March 2022 but was hospitalized due to a serious illness prior to joining the team.
The ECB expressed their profound shock on X, stating, "There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham's death. More than one of England’s finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world." The cricket community is currently in mourning, with heartfelt condolences extended to his wife Amanda, his children, his father Geoff, and all his family and friends during this incredibly challenging time.
