At just seven years old, Sony's Horizon Zero Dawn wasn't an obvious candidate for a remastered edition. However, with the Horizon Zero Dawn Remaster set to release in a week, three players have taken on the task of creating a comprehensive comparison between the original game and its upgraded version.

Reddit users Lanny16_I_think, Nixxes, and Guerrilla collaborated on this comparison, meticulously using an early copy of the Zero Dawn Remaster to match up with screenshots from the game's initial release. Each comparison highlights significant improvements beyond graphics, making Aloy's world appear more vibrant and lifelike.

For instance, a town sequence in the original Zero Dawn lacks NPC characters and features an obtrusive orange tint. The remastered version not only increases the number of background NPCs but also eliminates the orange tint, revealing a more vivid environment. The Reddit thread also showcases the remaster's enhanced skin textures and lush background details.

However, some screenshots from the original Horizon Zero Dawn do not accurately represent the developer's intent. In a post on X, Guerrilla Games Studio Art Director Jan-Bart van Beek pointed out that a particular screenshot reflects a lighting function error. Van Beek later explained that the game uses an autobot system to capture screenshots in thousands of locations at various times of the day, noting that 'checking the results is still a human effort.'

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is scheduled to launch on PC and PlayStation 5 on October 31. Players who already own the original Horizon Zero Dawn can upgrade to the PS5 version for $10.
