“It’s so much more than a button!” These words from the Apple product expert who demonstrated the new iPhone 16 Plus to me a couple of months ago still resonate whenever I pick up this latest iteration of the company’s iconic mobile phone. I refer, of course, to the new Camera Control button on the iPhone 16. The emphasis Apple placed on this feature, alongside the Action button, made me wonder if this was a groundbreaking innovation or a strategic move to compensate for other modest updates in the latest iPhone model. As it turns out, it’s a bit of both.
The new buttons on the iPhone 16, both in the base model and the Plus, are noteworthy. While other manufacturers are reducing physical buttons, Apple has introduced two new ones: Action and Camera Control. The Action button, which debuted on the 15 Pro models, is now available on the 16 and 16 Plus, replacing the ring/silent switch and offering customizable functions. It’s a practical tool that saves time by allowing quick access to frequently used apps.
The Camera Control button is a game-changer, revolutionizing how you use the iPhone’s cameras. It simplifies launching the camera app, which is crucial given that life’s fleeting moments don’t wait for you to unlock your device. This button also allows you to adjust settings like zoom ratios and shutter speeds with ease. Initially, its placement on the phone’s edge led to accidental activations, but adjusting to a double-click launch sequence resolved this issue.
The iPhone 16 Plus retains the two-lens configuration but with a vertical lens arrangement, similar to older models. It features a 48-megapixel primary sensor and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens with an f/2.2 aperture and autofocus. The front camera remains 12-megapixel. The Camera Control button enhances photography by making settings adjustments intuitive and quick.
The iPhone 16 Plus’s camera system is robust, offering detailed daylight shots and vibrant colors. Portrait mode captures depth and details accurately. New Photographic Styles allow for personalized image adjustments, and the optical zoom performs well within its limited range. The ultrawide lens captures more light, enhancing low-light performance.
The iPhone 16 Plus’s A18 chip and 8GB RAM ensure excellent battery performance, lasting up to two days with normal use. It charges quickly, reaching 50% in just 35 minutes. The 6.7-inch OLED screen is bright and vibrant, though it has a 60Hz refresh rate.
With its excellent camera, new controls, and competitive price of Dh3,799, the iPhone 16 Plus offers great value, making it a top choice over the Pro models.
