Kamala Harris announced on Monday that she would undergo a cognitive test in response to criticisms from Donald Trump, and she dared the former president to do the same as concerns about mental fitness intensify in the presidential campaign. Harris has consistently argued that her 78-year-old Republican rival, who is now the oldest candidate ever to run for president in the US, is becoming increasingly erratic and unfit to lead the nation again. Meanwhile, Trump has disparaged the 60-year-old Democratic vice president, questioning her intelligence and appealing to voters in a race that polls indicate is closely contested.
During a segment on CBS released on Monday, Harris was asked if she would take a cognitive test, a suggestion that Trump had previously made on social media. "Absolutely. I would even challenge him to take the same test," the vice president responded. "This is the level he has sunk to. I believe he is becoming more unstable and unhinged, resorting to name-calling because he lacks a real plan for the American people," she added.
Harris's recent criticisms of Trump's fitness for office were fueled by comments from his longest-serving chief of staff, John Kelly. The decorated Iraq war veteran revealed in an interview with The New York Times that, while in office, Trump had made remarks suggesting that "Hitler did some good things too" and that he preferred military leaders like those Adolf Hitler had. Harris described Trump's alleged behavior as "profoundly troubling and extremely dangerous." She later concurred with Kelly's characterization of Trump as a "fascist."
