It's been more than ten years since the last installment in the Killzone series was released. Based on comments from a seasoned Guerrilla Games developer, it seems unlikely that the FPS franchise will make a comeback in the near future. Art director Roy Postma stated that the team "needed" to shift gears after the launch of Killzone: Shadow Fall in 2013.
Speaking to The Washington Post, Postma explained why Guerrilla moved away from Killzone and focused on what eventually became Horizon Zero Dawn. "We were done with it as a team. As a studio, we needed to refresh our creative direction," Postma said. "It was, by choice, the complete opposite of Killzone."
This decision has now resulted in the upcoming release of Lego Horizon Adventures, set to launch on November 14 for PC, PS5, and even Nintendo Switch. "I believe the themes and characters in this story are universally relatable, such as the concept of a found family and finding your place in the world," said Postma, who has been with Guerrilla for 24 years.
Furthermore, a recent report indicated that Guerrilla's next project will be Horizon Online, rather than a third entry in the single-player series. The latter could follow, but it may be several years away. This further suggests that Guerrilla has no immediate plans to revisit Killzone.
Killzone is just one of many major PlayStation franchises that Sony and its developers have left untouched for an extended period. Similar to Killzone, the Resistance shooter series is another that some fans believe should be revived for the PS5.
