Manchester United have appointed Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim as their new manager, replacing Erik ten Hag, according to a statement from the Premier League club on Friday. The club is hoping that one of Europe's most promising young coaches can lead them back to their former glory days.

Amorim, 39, made a significant impact at Sporting during his four-and-a-half-year tenure. Manchester United decided to terminate Dutchman Erik Ten Hag's two-year stint on Monday, following a 2-1 loss to West Ham the previous day, which left the financially robust club in 14th place in the Premier League standings.

Despite substantial investments in the transfer market over the summer, United have only managed to win one of their last eight matches across all competitions. Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as the interim manager.

Amorim was previously associated with the managerial vacancy at Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp's departure this year, but Dutch coach Arne Slot ultimately took the job at Anfield. Ten Hag's position, aged 54, had been under scrutiny multiple times, especially after United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe decided to keep him following an internal review at the end of last season. The club finished eighth in the league but secured the FA Cup with an unexpected win against Manchester City.

However, United have shown minimal improvement this season. British media were highly critical of Ten Hag on Tuesday, noting his frequent references to having a 'plan' while his teams consistently appeared disorganized.
