Nathan McSweeney's impressive form has him on the brink of a Test debut, having been confirmed as the opener for the final Australia A game. The South Australia captain was the standout performer in last week's victory against India A in Mackay, where he secured two top scores, including an unbeaten 88 in the second innings. McSweeney, who batted at No 4 in both innings of that match, has been promoted to open alongside Marcus Harris in the upcoming four-day match at the MCG.
This move reflects significant confidence in the right-hander, despite his lack of experience as an opener in the Sheffield Shield. McSweeney is optimistic about his potential to open at Test level and partner with veteran Usman Khawaja against India this summer. Chairman of selectors George Bailey noted that the batting order could be adjusted throughout the series, with Jimmy Peirson and Ollie Davies replacing Josh Philippe and Cooper Connolly.
The upcoming match also provides an opportunity to field a fresh bowling lineup, including Scott Boland, Nathan McAndrew, Michael Neser, and Corey Rocchiccioli. Selectors will wait until after the first innings of the Australia A match against India A before finalizing the Test squad, giving Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, and Sam Konstas one last chance to impress. McSweeney has emerged as the frontrunner to replace the injured Cameron Green, with a possibility of batting at No 3.
McSweeney's previous experience against the new ball has been limited to situations where his side has lost early wickets. If selected, he would be the first Australian since Richie Robinson in the 1977 Ashes to open in a Test without prior state-level experience. Meanwhile, India has brought in KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel for the final match against Australia A, potentially setting the stage for Rahul to open in the first Test in Perth.
