Necessity is often cited as the mother of invention, and following the significant departures of Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, and director Christopher Landon from the Scream franchise last year, Kevin Williamson—the original Scream writer and soon-to-be first-time Scream director—has a substantial task ahead with Scream 7. His promising start includes convincing Neve Campbell to reprise her iconic role as Sidney Prescott in the upcoming film. Now, there are indications that Williamson might be bringing back another familiar face to confront Ghostface. That face belongs to Patrick Dempsey, known as Detective Mark Kincaid.
During an interview on the American breakfast show TODAY last Thursday, Dempsey was asked if Campbell's return could pave the way for his own comeback. "I’m waiting on the script," the Ferrari actor revealed, who first appeared in Scream 3 as Detective Kincaid, investigating the 'Hollywood Murders' that brought him and Sidney together. Although he hasn't received any script details yet, Dempsey hinted that a return for Kincaid, who is now married to Sidney according to Scream lore, has been discussed. "There has been a conversation about it," he teased, "but I haven’t seen anything yet, so we'll see what happens."
Dempsey's interest in reprising his role in Scream 7 adds to the sense of a return to the franchise's roots. Campbell is back in action, Williamson is taking the director's chair, and, as reported earlier this year, Courteney Cox is in talks to bring back her character, Gale Weathers—the only character to appear in every Scream movie so far. The full roster of returning characters and their roles will be revealed when Scream 7 hits theaters on February 27, 2026.
