England batsman Phil Salt heaped accolades on batting consultant Kieron Pollard following a significant Super Eights victory against West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2024 on Thursday. Salt earned the player-of-the-match award for his explosive innings of 87 runs (off 47 balls, including 7 fours and 5 sixes) in England's comprehensive eight-wicket triumph at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. In a post-match interview, Salt highlighted the immense contribution Pollard has made to the England team. 'Pollard has added significant value to our group, particularly in how to approach a run chase. We've discussed strategies like scoring eight runs from one side and 12 from the other, aiming for a total of 200,' Salt told ICC. After a stellar bowling performance that limited West Indies to 180 runs, England's opening pair launched a robust start with a 67-run partnership. Despite the dismissals of Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali, a partnership between Jonny Bairstow and Salt, totaling 97 runs in 44 balls, sealed the victory. Salt acknowledged the challenge of executing such a performance against a skilled West Indies team. 'It might sound straightforward, but implementing it in the match was quite challenging. I realized I had slowed down and wasn't getting many chances to bat, but I knew if I could just navigate through that phase, we would be in a favorable position to take calculated risks against the bowlers,' he explained. Salt also emphasized the importance of the win in terms of confidence and momentum for the tournament. 'In tournament play, you need timely confidence and momentum, and this win against the hosts is a great start in that direction,' he added. England's next Super Eights fixture is against South Africa on Friday.
