Imagine a kitchen where a robot does all the cooking with just a click, no human intervention required. This futuristic modular kitchen features a robotic arm, two instant pots, and a fully stocked pantry. The innovation is currently showcased at the Big 5 Global conference, a construction industry event held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
"The robotic arm can wash rice, chop vegetables, sauté, and cook one-pot dishes," explained Captain Ehsan Khalid, Founder and Director of Chilly Robotics. "It can also alert you when pantry essentials are running low and, with your permission, order groceries online." The kitchen is a collaboration between Indian company Chilly Robotics Kitchen and US-based Autochef Robotics Inc.
During a demonstration, the makers showed how Autochef can prepare a rice pilaf, from sautéing onions to cooking the dish. Controlled via an app, users can program the kitchen to cook meals at specific times. Priced at $40,000 (approx. Dh147,000), the 5ft by 7ft kitchen is designed to operate autonomously, featuring a central robotic arm, built-in exhaust system, and designated containers for ingredients.
"When people want to buy the kitchen, we can design it with a chiller for fresh ingredients," said Captain Khalid. "This allows users to fill it in the morning and program the kitchen to cook dinner by the time they return home." The pantry section includes two tiers of containers, one for dry ingredients and pulses, and another for spices.
The kitchen is customizable and can be integrated into existing setups. It includes an inbuilt water supply and exhaust system, but can also connect to a home's water supply. A pilot by profession, Captain Khalid developed an interest in cooking during the Covid pandemic and saw the potential to automate meal preparation.
After nearly five years of testing, he successfully created the Autochef. "The first dish I cooked was pasta," he recalled. "My wife made a pot of chicken pasta as a backup, but Autochef's pasta was licked clean, while hers had leftovers. That's when I knew I had succeeded." Currently in its testing phase, Captain Khalid has already received several orders and is looking to partner with UAE property developers to integrate the kitchen into premium properties.
