Manchester United has confirmed that Rúben Amorim will become their new head coach starting from 11 November, during the international break. The 39-year-old is transitioning from Sporting, where he achieved two league titles and two league cups over four complete seasons.
"Manchester United is pleased to confirm the appointment of Rúben Amorim as the head coach of the men's first team, pending work visa requirements," the club stated. "He has agreed to a contract lasting until June 2027, with an option for the club to extend it by an additional year. He will officially join Manchester United on Monday, 11 November, after fulfilling his commitments with Sporting CP.
"Rúben is recognized as one of the most promising young coaches in European football. With an impressive track record as both a player and a coach, his achievements include two Primeira Liga victories with Sporting CP in Portugal, the first of which ended a 19-year title drought for the club. Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to manage the team until Rúben's arrival."
Amorim was quickly identified as United's top choice after Erik ten Hag was dismissed with the team in 14th place in the Premier League. Sporting disclosed on Tuesday that United had contacted them and were prepared to meet the €10m (£8.3m) release clause, but the transition was delayed due to negotiations over Amorim's 30-day notice period. An agreement was reached for Amorim to remain at Sporting until after their match against Braga on 10 November.
Amorim, who had discussions with West Ham earlier this year and was also on Manchester City's radar as they prepared for Pep Guardiola's potential departure, previously had a brief stint as Braga's head coach before taking over at Sporting in March 2020. Van Nistelrooy will oversee three more home games—against Chelsea on Sunday, PAOK on Thursday, and Leicester on 10 November—before passing the reins.
