A three-month-old infant, Silina, underwent a complex heart surgery at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) due to symptoms such as shortness, heart failure, and recurrent chest infections requiring mechanical ventilation. Upon arriving at SKMC, Silina, weighing just 2.3kg, relied on a ventilator to breathe due to aspiration pneumonia. She had been admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and diagnosed with Transitional Atrioventricular Canal, a complex congenital heart disease.
Specialist Paediatric Cardiologist Dr Antoine Girgius and Specialist Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon Dr Aleksandr Omelchenko led the surgical team to provide specialized care. Silina's mother expressed gratitude to the medical team, emphasizing the high level of professionalism and expertise at SKMC that saved her baby's life. This achievement was attributed to the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare platform in the Middle East.
Dr Girgius and Dr Omelchenko highlighted the precision and innovative techniques required to overcome the unique challenges in Silina's case. The successful outcome of the surgery is a testament to the team's expertise and the commitment to pushing the boundaries of paediatric cardiac care.
