In 2024, Spain experienced its warmest August since record-keeping began, with an average temperature of 25° Celsius (77° Fahrenheit), according to the national weather agency.
This summer, heat records were broken or matched in various global locations, including Japan and parts of China. The AEMET meteorological agency declared on X (formerly Twitter) that August 2024 was the hottest on record for mainland Spain.
The average temperature this August surpassed those of 2003 and 2023 by two-tenths, which were previously the warmest. The agency also suggested that 2024 might tie with 2022 as the warmest year in Spain since records began, with 2022 holding the current record at 15.7°C.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service, an EU climate monitor, indicated that it was becoming more probable that 2024 would be the hottest year globally on record. Additionally, China recorded its hottest August last month, and Japan announced that this summer was the warmest since record-keeping began.
