If you missed The Substance in theaters, what excuse do you have? (Other than the fact that it’s a two-hour-plus body-horror spectacle, which isn’t everyone’s preferred genre.) If you did catch it in theaters, chances are you’re eager to experience it again—in all its gruesome splendor—for another round. Well, to both groups we bring good, gooey news: you’ll be able to stream it on Halloween night from the comfort of your own home, where you can pause and dash to the (starkly white-tiled) bathroom if you need a moment to compose yourself. Mubi released the film in cinemas and has now confirmed that it will be streaming for Mubi members on its platform on October 31—a Halloween treat for all the horror enthusiasts out there. Whether you watch it before or after dinner (surely not during) is up to you.
In case you somehow missed it, the film—directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat—stars Demi Moore as aging A-lister Elizabeth Sparkle, who is unceremoniously dropped from her hit fitness show when she turns (gasp!) 50. Shortly after, she discovers an underground treatment known as The Substance—a dubious (yet beautifully packaged) kit that creates a younger version of herself. Margaret Qualley’s Sue emerges, living the life Liz no longer feels she can. But when the strict rules of how The Substance should be used are broken, things go seriously awry.
After winning the Best Screenplay award at Cannes, it remains to be seen if The Substance can make an impact during awards season—possibly with a nod to Demi for her wildly committed (and often devastating) performance. Either way, prepare to be under the influence of The Substance this Halloween. One rule: if you’re watching it while enjoying any leftover trick-or-treat goodies, make sure you... respect the balance.
