A narrow tunnel in New York City's subway has evolved into the city’s most unconventional interactive therapy space. The tunnel, located between 6th and 7th Avenue, is adorned with thousands of Post-it notes, each bearing a message that reflects a subway rider’s thoughts, hopes, fears, or humor. This unique installation is part of 'Subway Therapy,' an art project initiated by Matthew Chavez.
Chavez recounts, 'People will walk up and spend just a minute with me, then come to me saying, Wow, this is amazing. This made my day. This made my week. I really needed this.' Danielle Guy, a visitor from Alabama, stumbled upon the project while using the subway. She shared, 'I wrote 'I choose kindness even when it's hard' because I've had a tough time not wanting to retaliate when treated poorly by some people recently. It's easy to want to be mean, but being kind is the best response.'
Chavez began the project in 2016, just days after President Donald Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton. While the project isn't inherently political, its timing post-election has led to many political notes being left. Chavez explains, 'This project is not a reaction to the election, but it invites people to express their feelings as they experience them. The election context certainly influences what people write about.' Notes range from 'OMG why Trump' to a drawing of crying eyes, and even 'My GF butt.'
Chavez reflects, 'There's something about the fast-paced nature of New York City. It's strange yet fascinating. People have so much to express. I love being in places where people are constantly moving, yet they stop briefly to share something personal before continuing on their way.'
