Taylor Fritz shattered Alexander Zverev's flawless serving streak at Wimbledon this year, staging a remarkable recovery from a two-set deficit to defeat the German fourth seed 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3, advancing to the quarterfinals.
For two-and-a-half sets on Monday, Zverev's serve remained unbreakable, maintaining a streak of 56 consecutive holds across four matches. Zverev appeared poised to reach the grasscourt major's final eight for the first time, leading two sets to love and tied at 4-4 in the third.
However, a double fault by Zverev gifted Fritz an unforeseen break in the subsequent game, igniting the American's performance. Fritz relentlessly pursued every shot Zverev delivered, executing stunning diving winners in the fifth set, leaving Zverev facing imminent defeat.
A backhand winner into an open court saw Fritz triumphantly raise his arm, while Zverev was left to contemplate another disheartening Wimbledon exit. The American 13th seed will next confront Italian Lorenzo Musetti.
