Before 1988, John Madden had already cemented his status as an NFL legend, both as a head coach and a TV broadcaster. However, it was the release of John Madden Football that transformed him into a video game icon. The Madden franchise has thrived for nearly four decades, with the latest installment being Madden NFL 25. This month, Prime Video delves into the history of this blockbuster series with a new documentary, 'It's In the Game: Madden NFL.' The first trailer has just been released, taking viewers back to a time before the Madden games became cultural phenomena.

During the development of the first game, Madden was insistent that the title bearing his name should authentically represent football. This meant having 11 players on the field for each team, a challenging feat at the time. Over the years, advancements in video game technology have allowed Madden NFL to progressively achieve a more realistic depiction of the sport. The franchise has become so pervasive that it has spawned its own folklore, including the infamous 'Madden curse.' Several athletes, such as Christian McCaffrey from Madden NFL 25, have suffered injuries after appearing on the game's cover. While this is more likely a result of the physically demanding nature of football, the legend persists.

'It's In the Game: Madden NFL' is set to premiere on Prime Video on November 26 and will span four episodes. This documentary is just the beginning of future Madden-related projects. Nicolas Cage is set to star in a biopic about Madden's NFL career, directed by David O. Russell. Additionally, Madden NFL 25 was one of the first games to be optimized for the PS5 Pro.
