Torrential rains have caused a landslide in the southern Italian province of Caserta, leading to evacuations. Rescuers are currently searching for a woman and her adult son who went missing on Wednesday and are feared to have perished. The adverse weather conditions affected the town of San Felice a Cancello, located approximately 30km northeast of Naples, as well as neighboring municipalities, on Tuesday afternoon. The missing duo, a woman in her 70s and her son in his 40s, were traveling in a three-wheeler that was engulfed by the landslide. Emergency services discovered the vehicle's damaged remains in the mud.
"We are hoping they managed to jump out...and might still be alive somewhere, but according to the experts, the chances are slim," stated local mayor Emilio Nuzzo in an interview with Italian media. The fire brigade announced on X that 10 search teams have been deployed to locate the pair, and that the landslide has necessitated the evacuation of residents from their homes. Severe weather also impacted other regions of Italy on Tuesday, with fierce thunderstorms and hail reported in the Milan and Como areas, as well as along the Tuscan coast.
