In an effort to expand the green spaces in the UAE and bolster the nation's sustainable agricultural growth, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCAE) distributed approximately 20,000 native tree seedlings on Friday in partnership with Al Qaydi Nurseries and Farms. This event marked the official kickoff of the 'Distributing One Million Local Tree Seedlings' campaign. This initiative is a key component of the larger 'Plant the Emirates' national program, which seeks to enhance the UAE's food security, support local farming, and promote ecological sustainability.
MoCCAE Minister Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dhahak, alongside several farmers, environmentalists, and agricultural sector stakeholders, attended the distribution ceremony. 'Today, we witnessed and learned about numerous local plants being propagated and cultivated in this nursery, along with various initiatives over the years that have contributed to expanding the green area in the UAE and even beyond its borders,' the minister remarked, referring to Salem Al-Qaydi, the owner of the organic Alqaydi farm and nursery in Ras Alkhaimah's Kadra area.
Dr. Al Dhahak highlighted that the nursery's dedication to growing native plants that are well-suited to the UAE's harsh climate—marked by high temperatures and scarce water resources—sets a commendable example for other farmers and nursery operators across the country. 'These plants, deeply rooted in the UAE’s environment, offer a sustainable model for agricultural practices that benefit both the land and the community,' she added. The core objective of today’s initiative involves distributing one million local tree saplings, which will be planted across various institutions, including educational establishments, government entities, and private farms. These saplings are meticulously chosen for their adaptability to the UAE’s climate and their role in enhancing the nation’s green landscape.
The 'One Million Local Tree Seedlings' project aligns with the UAE's dedication to environmental sustainability and its push to cultivate a community-led movement. Dr. Al Dhahak reiterated that the initiative is a continuation of the 'Plant the UAE' program launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in early October. 'This is truly a community-driven movement that unites all those who care about the UAE’s green future. We are confident that with the support of partners like Salem Al-Qaydi, we will continue to make a lasting impact for years to come,' she stated.
The event also emphasized the increasing role of local farmers and agricultural specialists in expanding the UAE’s green cover, particularly through the cultivation of native species that align with the country’s environmental and sustainability objectives.
