Schools across the UAE have diverse policies regarding student mobile phone use, ranging from complete bans to strict restrictions. The issue has recently gained attention following a directive from the UAE’s Ministry of Education, which mandates a one-month confiscation period for repeat offenders.
Public schools prohibit students from bringing mobile phones to ensure their safety, privacy, and positive behavior. A second violation results in the phone being held until the end of the school year. The new circular mandates “periodic checks” to detect phones, conducted with respect for students’ privacy, involving voluntary removal of items from bags or pockets before inspection.
Some private schools also follow similar practices, with Credence High School, for instance, enforcing a strict no-mobile phone policy until grade 8. Deepika Thapar Singh, CEO-Principal of Credence High School, explained that the policy aims to control the negative impact of cell phones on students' socio-emotional health and minimize distractions that hinder academic performance.
Only under special circumstances are Grade 9-12 students allowed to carry phones, requiring prior approval and strict adherence to usage rules. Headteachers often conduct workshops on responsible technology use and discuss the negative impacts of inappropriate mobile phone use, such as cyberbullying and social isolation.
Baz Nijjar, Vice President – Education Technology & Digital Innovation at GEMS Education, emphasized that technology, when used correctly, enhances learning. School networks typically feature robust filters that block access to social media sites, reducing distractions and safeguarding students from inappropriate content.
Most schools tailor their policies based on community needs. Sangita Chima, Principal of Amity School Dubai, highlighted their clear and responsible mobile usage policy, designed with student safety and learning focus in mind. Students are permitted to bring phones for safe travel, depositing them with the class teacher upon arrival and collecting them at dismissal.
The Principal emphasized that mobile phones are not to be kept with students during lessons. Non-compliance results in parents being informed and requested to collect the mobile from the school, ensuring students manage their responsibility within the guidelines.
