What makes us adore Deadpool? Firstly, he's incredibly resilient, and secondly, we feel a connection to him. Not because of his miraculous healing powers, but due to his engaging and humorous character. Ryan Reynolds is the perfect choice to portray Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool. In fact, Reynolds embodies the role perfectly. However, Deadpool & Wolverine, as the title implies, isn't focused on Wade nor on the second titular hero, Wolverine, portrayed by Hugh Jackman. The most intriguing aspect of the film is Jackman's comeback as the beloved mutant, whom fans said goodbye to in 2017's Logan. After Disney's acquisition of Fox in 2019, which granted them access to the cherished X-Men and Fantastic Four characters, plans changed, bringing Wolverine back into action during a low point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since Avengers: Endgame in 2019, Marvel has been criticized for producing mediocre films, overusing the multiverse concept, and weakening its characters. Deadpool is celebrated for his satirical humor, providing comic relief in the film. This is evident in Shawn Levy's Deadpool & Wolverine, where Reynolds delivers joke after joke, targeting Fox, Disney, Marvel, and even DC, creating a comedic roast that keeps audiences laughing. The film hits its comedic marks well, but falters in its storyline and action sequences. The plot revolves around Deadpool's desire to be significant, primarily to his love Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) and his friends, and to save the world, aspiring to be an 'Avenger'. Despite not seeming like the typical hero, he strives to fulfill this role. His universe is threatened by extinction due to the demise of an 'anchor-being', prompting him to attempt to revive him. The situation escalates, leading to a memorable team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine, who, along with their allies, confront Cassandra Nova (Chuck Xavier's sister), played by Emma Corrin, and her mercenaries in The Void, a setting reminiscent of Mad Max. Leveraging the Time Variant Authority in the MCU, the franchise manipulates timelines and universes to reintroduce beloved characters in different forms. This is showcased in Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a blend of fan-favorite X-Men characters now part of the Marvel lineup. Despite the inclusion of these characters, the action scenes are lackluster, with only a few exceptions. The film's stale narrative can be overlooked as it serves as a transition, saying 'Goodbye, Fox' and 'Welcome to Marvel', reintroducing our favorite X-Men characters. Wolverine, along with other notable cameos, is poised to play a more significant role in this universe, potentially restoring Marvel's former prestige.
