Winning a jackpot can bring about life-changing experiences in ways that are hard to imagine. For some, it’s the financial stability they’ve always longed for; for others, it’s the chance to invest, give back to the community, and pursue their passions. For Vinod CK, a Dubai resident, his life took a dramatic turn on November 30, 2014, when he won $1 million (Dh3.67 million) in the Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire Series 179 raffle. Originally from Kerala, Vinod arrived in the UAE in 1996 and held various positions—procurement assistant, procurement executive, and procurement manager—before his big win.

“A Filipino colleague initiated a fund to buy raffle tickets,” Vinod recalled. “We would each contribute Dh100 or Dh200 to purchase tickets. On that memorable day, the prize was shared among 10 people, each receiving Dh300,640. Back then, tickets weren’t available online, so we had to physically go to a hotel in Jumeirah to buy them.” The win gave Vinod the confidence to explore new opportunities. After his company went through a redundancy phase, he transitioned into entrepreneurship. He partnered in a marine automation company and invested in mutual funds and real estate in India. “I’ve structured my earnings around my investments and company,” he said.

Vinod didn’t just focus on personal growth; he also allocated part of his winnings to charity. “It’s crucial to share your blessings,” he said. Despite his significant win, participating in raffles remains a habit for Vinod. “I spend about Dh500 a month on tickets, sometimes even Dh1,000,” he said. “In total, I’ve probably spent Dh100,000 on lotteries. But for me, it’s not about the money; it’s about the positive energy and confidence it gives me.”

Shahid Mahmood, a long-time UAE resident from Pakistan, experienced a life-changing moment in October 2021 when he won Dh15 million in the Big Ticket Draw Series 233. His journey from being a labourer to becoming an entrepreneur is truly inspiring. Shahid came to the UAE in 2007 as a blue-collar worker and worked his way up to a supervisor role by 2011. After over 12 years of participating in raffles, his persistence finally paid off. “I spent more than Dh70,000 on tickets over the years. I missed participating just once, and I’m glad I didn’t give up,” he said.

His winnings enabled him to establish three businesses: a technical services company, a document-clearing firm, and a transport company. Shahid also fulfilled a personal dream by purchasing a brand-new Lexus RX 450 for Dh292,000 and investing in property back home in Pakistan. He’s currently constructing a building named Emirates Tower as a tribute to the country that transformed his fortunes. Generosity remains a cornerstone of Shahid’s success. “I’ve donated to charity and supported my hometown in Pakistan. Giving back is an integral part of my journey,” he said.

Despite his accomplishments, Shahid continues to participate in raffles, aiming to win again and set a record. “I want to be the first person to win the Big Ticket jackpot twice. It’s a record I’m determined to achieve,” he declared. He continues to participate in the Big Ticket draw every month, confident that luck will favour him once more.

In September 2021, Mir, a 37-year-old sales manager in Dubai, won Dh1 million in the Mahzooz millionaire draw. His ticket, purchased just hours before the announcement, marked the beginning of a new chapter. “This win has truly been a blessing,” said Mir. “It has given me a sense of security and the confidence to dream bigger.” Mir chose to invest his winnings in properties and businesses in Oman and India, focusing on long-term growth. Although the returns are modest for now, he remains optimistic about their potential. “Once the businesses mature, the returns will be significant,” he said.

In addition to securing his family’s future, Mir made career moves, joining a new company while continuing to focus on his investments. “The prize money has allowed me to explore new opportunities and build a better future,” said Mir.
