The Israeli military announced on Friday its intention to reopen the Kissufim crossing into central Gaza, aiming to boost the influx of aid to the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

This decision follows mounting international pressure on Israel to facilitate greater aid delivery to Gaza, where humanitarian organizations have sounded alarms about a deepening crisis in the northern region. This area has been the focal point of a significant military operation by Israeli forces for over a month.

The reopening of the crossing will occur after recent engineering efforts by army personnel to construct inspection points and paved roads, according to military statements.

In the midst of intense ground combat, Palestinian and UN representatives assert that there are no secure zones within the enclave, where the majority of its 2.3 million inhabitants have been compelled to abandon their homes.

Last month, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin penned a letter to Israeli officials, urging them to take concrete steps to alleviate the deteriorating conditions in the Palestinian territory. The letter, which was made public by an Axios journalist, set a 30-day deadline for the Israeli government to enhance the humanitarian landscape in Gaza. One of the key demands in the letter was the establishment of a fifth crossing into Gaza.
