The Metropol Hotel Commemorates its 120th Anniversary with the Launch of New Signature Rooms
Located in the very heart of the capital, nestled between the Kremlin and the Bolshoi Theatre, the Metropol Hotel has consistently been at the forefront of significant events. People often say: “Where Moscow happens.”
The Metropol is remarkably multifaceted — it has embraced the innovative spirit of its founder, Savva Mamontov, along with the sophisticated taste of the renowned architects, artists, and sculptors who contributed to the building's design. It is also a gracious host, welcoming guests with the finest traditions of Russian hospitality, and a storyteller with a distinctive character, poised to preserve and share the remarkable history that has unfolded within its walls.
This year, the Metropol marks its 120th anniversary. To celebrate this milestone, the grand hotel has undergone a comprehensive renovation and unveiled a new range of Signature Rooms across several categories: “Executive,” “Grand Superior,” “Deluxe,” and “Deluxe Suite” are now available, while the opulent “Premier Suites” will soon be added.
The rooms were designed by Denniston, a world-renowned design studio specializing in luxury hospitality projects (its portfolio includes Aman Hotels & Resorts, Four Seasons, and Cheval Blanc). Established in 1983, Denniston has developed numerous projects that are widely recognized as masterpieces of architecture and design. In 2006, the firm’s founder and chief architect, Jean-Michel Gathy, was inducted into Hospitality Design's Platinum Circle and honored as one of the most influential figures in the global hospitality industry.
Denniston’s success is rooted in the careful selection of a bespoke team for each individual project, alongside Jean-Michel’s direct engagement in the design process. He, along with his colleagues, has made numerous visits to Moscow to study the Metropol’s architecture and its abundant visual and historical imagery, which the team subsequently reinterpreted in an imaginative and contemporary manner.
The design of the Signature Rooms emphasizes continuity and fidelity to the Metropol’s heritage. Touch the wardrobe handle and you’ll discover the initial letter of the grand hotel’s name; look up to the high ceilings and you’ll see the original tent-like vaults, a visual echo of the historic ceiling in the hotel’s restaurant, supported by arches instead of straight angles, thereby forming a unique dome.
The aesthetic is defined by Art Nouveau: the elegance of flowing furniture lines, custom-created doors crafted by Denniston, a palette of vibrant and soft pastel shades, dynamic silk wallpaper panels, textured wooden accents, crystal pendant lights by the beds, and majestic chandeliers featuring glass spheres in the living rooms. This timeless design philosophy embodies the richness of Russian hospitality traditions while boldly looking to the future, and is thus true to the vision of founder Savva Mamontov, who originally envisioned the Metropol as an innovative, forward-thinking project.
All rooms are outfitted with cutting-edge technology and smart home systems. Particular emphasis has been placed on the bathrooms, which feature marble finishes, spacious bathtubs, and tropical showers to ensure maximum relaxation. Each room is functionally zoned for both work and leisure, making it especially convenient for business travelers.
From the premium Deluxe Rooms and Deluxe Suites, guests can take in the iconic sights of the Kremlin’s ruby stars, the Bolshoi Theatre, the State Historical Museum, and the bustling Teatralnaya Square.
Guests can further discover Denniston’s interiors in the elegant Chaliapin Grand Lobby & Bar, where tradition merges with modern elegance. This luxurious space exudes a warm ambiance and offers a menu that highlights contemporary Russian cuisine. Live music performances are held here on various evenings throughout the week.
